What we do

A path for opportunity, citizenship, and leadership.

The Bankhead Boys Association is dedicated to helping at risk boys, ages 7–18, living in areas of concentrated poverty in Atlanta become successful, independent citizens.

Mentoring
01

Mentoring

Every boy enrolled is matched with a mentor who works at one of our corporate sponsors and volunteers one to two hours a week.

Mentoring happens one-on-one inside a real workplace, covering education, health, money, life skills, and social emotional learning. Our mentors are driven by their own passion to help boys in the Atlanta area, and they go above and beyond.

Social Services
02

Social Services

Social Services and individual assistance are provided as necessary, facilitated by staff and mentors.

Health issues, encouraging doctor and dentist visits, transportation to providers, teen employment, juvenile justice, and visits to school administrators and teachers for educational support.

Scouting
03

Scouting

A proud member of the Boy Scouts of America, with a troop that meets weekly under national BSA guidelines.

Scouting day trips, camping trips, summer Boy Scout camps, and other activities. Senior boys are encouraged to become scout leaders, and all boys are encouraged to earn badges.

How we are different

Boys who live in areas of concentrated poverty have special circumstances and special needs. Our program is finely tuned to their needs.

Transportation
01

Transportation

Boys in our program typically have no means of transportation other than public transit. We pick the boys up at their schools or neighborhoods to take them to meetings, camping, and hiking trips.

Mentoring
02

Mentoring

Many of our boys have many brothers and sisters and a single mother, and are left to raise themselves. We fill in the gaps with mentors who meet weekly and take an active interest in the issues each boy faces.

Respect and support
03

Respect and support

Boys need respect and they need to feel safe. We give them that needed respect and support structure, and our leaders actively monitor and intervene when needed.

School contact
04

School contact

As much as practical, we integrate our efforts with school administrative staff and teachers to help the boys succeed, and encourage mentors to keep an open dialogue with teachers.

Workplace environments
05

Workplace environments

We take the boys to their mentor's workplace during sessions, so they see for themselves how successful people work and interact with others.

Cub Scouts & Boy Scouts
06

Cub Scouts & Boy Scouts

An active Cub Scout and Boy Scout program where we encourage senior boys to become leaders and all boys to earn badges and attend summer camp.
